If
you absolutely must make an edit to your Windows Registry, there are
steps you can take to lessen the chance of a catastrophic PC
meltdown. The following are simple but important:
BACK-UP YOUR ENTIRE REGISTRY AND SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT.
Do this immediately before you open a single folder in your
computer. Take extreme measures. Save your registry – and everything
else – to a USB flash drive, another hard drive (external), or a CD.
Also, set a System Restore point for good measure to allow yourself
the option of turning back time if you have to. All these
precautions against the unthinkable will be well worth your time and
effort.
CLICK ON START, CLICK ON RUN, TYPE ‘REGEDIT’. If you are
running Windows Vista, simply go directly to RUN and type REGEDIT.
Your Registry Editor appears in its own window.
IN THE LEFT PANE OF THE EDITOR, SELECT YOUR TARGETS.
If you are following specific instructions such as those given in a
virus removal recipe, this is the time to review them again…and then
again….and then again! Make sure you know exactly which string you
are correcting, deleting, etc. One wrong move and…well, you get the
picture. If you are having trouble locating what you need, use the
search box to narrow the choices.
SAVE YOUR CHANGES, CLOSE THE EDITOR, REBOOT, AND RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!
All changes take place at the reboot. If your PC starts –
congratulations (and don’t ever do that again!). If it doesn’t, the
precautions you took as backup will make everything okay.
INVEST IN A REGISTRY CLEANER. DOWNLOAD A FREE TRIAL. BE
PROACTIVE! Every once in awhile, particularly with Anti-Virus
software, you will be instructed to make a change in your Registry
Editor. It does happen. However, if you invest in a good Registry

you stepping into that dark place will be rare indeed. A
